How this demerit calculator works
DemeritCheck is a free, browser-based AARTO demerit point calculator for South African drivers. You look up charges from Schedule 3 of the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences Regulations, 2026 (GN R.7646, Government Gazette 54922), add them as rows, and mark each asPending or Final. Only final rows sum toward your illustrative total against the published 15-point disqualification threshold in regulation 20(6).
The calculator does not ask for your ID, licence number, or personal details. Selections stay in your browser for the current session and can be shared via a URL that contains only charge codes and pending/final status — nothing personally identifying.
What AARTO demerit points mean
Under the AARTO framework, certain road traffic infringements and offences carry demerit points in addition to any monetary penalty. Point values appear in Schedule 3, column 6 and range from 0 to 6 depending on the charge. When a matter becomes final against you, those points are what the Act would record against your driving licence — once demerit enforcement is proclaimed.
Until then, the schedule itself is useful for planning and education: you can see how many points a speeding-related or licensing charge would contribute, how several final charges stack toward 15, and what an illustrative suspension estimate would look like if you went over the threshold.
Pending vs final offences
Receiving an infringement notice does not automatically mean points are final. You may still be within a window to pay at a discount, make a representation, or nominate another driver. Until that process concludes, treat the charge as pending. This calculator only scores rows marked Final, so leaving uncertain matters as Pending avoids overstating your risk.
Enforcement status (August 2026)
Two facts are easy to confuse, and most secondary websites get at least one of them wrong:
- The 2026 regulations — including the Schedule 3 point table — are in force from 1 July 2026.
- Demerit enforcement under AARTO Act sections 24–28 (allocation, disqualification, surrender, cancellation, and point reduction) has not been proclaimed. No South African driver currently has a live demerit register that can suspend a licence under those sections.

How the suspension estimate is calculated
When your final total exceeds 15, the results panel shows an illustrative suspension length using the commonly cited formula of three months per point over 15 (for example, 17 final points → six months). That formula reflects how section 25 of the Act is usually summarised. It is not a prediction of any current action against your licence, because those enforcement sections are not yet in force.

Does this calculator check my official demerit balance?
No. DemeritCheck is an unofficial educational tool. It does not connect to RTIA, RTMC, or eNaTIS, and it does not store ID numbers, licence numbers, or offence history.
What happens if I go over 15 demerit points?
Once demerit enforcement is proclaimed, exceeding 15 final points could lead to disqualification. The Act commonly links suspension length to three months per point over 15. That estimate is illustrative only while sections 24–28 remain unproclaimed.
